Concepts and Operationalization

This is the third component of the research project for this course. In this section of the research project, you need to outline the main concepts/variables used in your survey to answer your research question. Please specify your dependent and independent variables and how they will be operationalized (You do not have to write the survey questions yet, just think about which questions you could use to operationalize your main concepts). This part of the research project should be up to 3 pages (double-spaced) in length.

Specifically, you need to answer the following questions:

  1. What is the dependent variable of your analysis, and how is it operationalized? Please indicate if this variable is nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio.
  2. What are the independent (explanatory) variables, and how are they operationalized? (You might have one main explanatory variable or many explanatory variables). Please indicate if these variables are nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio.
  3. Identify the control variables (i.e., other variables that might affect the behavior of the dependent variable) and their operationalization. Generally, these variables are associated with alternative explanations of the effect you study and control for these “other” effects. Please indicate if each of these variables is nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio.

Ensure that you address all relevant concepts/variables you need to consider to answer your research question.

Criteria Ratings Pts
This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeDependent Variable
1.2 to >1.05 pts

Excellent

You provided an exemplary description of the dependent variable and correctly indicated if it is nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio.

1.05 to >0.3 pts

Average

You provided an adequate description of the dependent variable and indicated if it is nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio.

0.3 to >0 pts

Poor

You failed to describe the dependent variable or didn’t indicate if it is nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio.

1.2 pts
This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeIndependent Variables
1.2 to >1.05 pts

Excellent

You provided an exemplary description of the independent variables and correctly indicated if they are nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio.

1.05 to >0.3 pts

Average

You provided an adequate description of the independent variables and indicated if they are nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio.

0.3 to >0 pts

Poor

You failed to describe the independent variables or did not indicate if they are nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio.

1.2 pts
This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeControl Variables
1.2 to >1.05 pts

Excellent

You clearly identified the control variables and correctly indicated if they are nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio.

1.05 to >0.3 pts

Average

You adequately identified the control variables and indicated if they are nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio.

0.3 to >0 pts

Poor

You failed to identify the control variables or didn’t indicate if they are nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio.

1.2 pts
This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeWriting
0.4 to >0.35 pts

Excellent

Your writing is free of spelling errors and uses correct punctuation and grammar. There is a graceful use of language that communicates meaning to readers with clarity and fluency.

0.35 to >0.1 pts

Average

The assignment is written in a somewhat clear manner. There are occasional lapses in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and/or language use that distract the reader.

0.1 to >0 pts

Poor

The assignment is not clearly written. There are profuse spelling and grammar errors, incorrect punctuation, issues with language use that make the document incomprehensible.
