The First Step Act (2018, P.L. 115-391) is a law that requires federal prisons to improve the circumstances and conditions of federal inmates, as well as to reduce recidivism rates. This is the first significant criminal justice reform legislation to extend compassionate release, reduce sentences, and manage the health care needs of inmates.
